RLSS NPLQ - UNITS 1 & 2
Course Description:
The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is widely accepted by swimming pools both in
the UK and Ireland. The NPLQ also has full accreditation from the Qualifications and Curriculum
Authority. The NPLQ also has widespread international recognition; significantly through the
International Life Saving Federation.

Training:
Training and assessment for the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is in two units.
Unit 1 The Principles of Lifesaving and Swimming Pool Supervision.
(Minimum of 31 hours training)
Unit 2 The Application of Supervision and Rescue in a Swimming Pool.
(Minimum of a further 7 hours training)

Diving & Jumping in Swimming Pools
Flumes, Waterslides and other Water Features in Swimming Pools
Pre requisits:
Every candidate, prior to commencement of a NPLQ course, must:
Be 16 years of age prior to commencing a course of training.
Must be able to meet the following basic fitness criteria
Jump/dive into deep water
Swim 50 meters in less than 60 seconds
Swim 100 meters continuously on front and back
In deep water, tread water for at least 30 seconds
Surface dive to the floor of the pool
Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits
Once a candidate has met these criteria, they may start their course of training.
Assessment:
Assessment for Unit 1 takes place at the conclusion of a training course.
It determines a candidate's knowledge and understanding of the principles
of working as a pool lifeguard and of his or her ability in a range of lifesaving
skills as they relate to rescue in a range of common emergency situations
that could occur in any pool.
Assessment for Unit 2 is continuously assessed over a course of a minimum
of a further 7 hours training. It determines the candidate's ability to apply the
Unit 1 skills and knowledge in a work related environment as they would apply
in a swimming pool.
The NPLQ is awarded upon successful completion of both units.
